AIR NEW ZEALAND CHARGES

Last year Air New Zealand introduced a Firearms handling fee of $120 or $200 for firearms checked as baggage on International flights.  It was claimed that in the past they had been able to absorb this cost within ticket prices, but were no longer willing or able to continue to do this.

It was never made clear whether the fees they were trying to recover were Customs Fees or Airport Handling & Inspection fees.  They were to apply only to International flights, and were to be charged per luggage piece containing firearms, not per firearm.

SSANZ AGM

Those who missed the SSANZ AGM in the NZDA Hall at Point Chevalier, 2nd December, didn’t just miss a fine BBQ.  Guest speaker Police Inspector Peter Gibson, Operations Manager for Auckland City and Officer in Charge of the Auckland AOS, gave us a very valuable insight into the reasons the Armed Offenders Squad was formed and the successful strategies they have used ever since.

Letter from Richard Prosser MP to the NZ Herald in response to last week's article.

Your claim that:

"The outcome is that New Zealand and the United States are virtually alone among Western nations in not requiring the registration of firearms."

Is incorrect and misleading. Of the 79 nations which responded to the 1999 United Nations Small Arms Survey, only three, Japan, Kenya, and Guinea-Bissau, maintain comprehensive nationwide computerised firearms registers including serial numbers.

The rest have a mix of local and regional registers, many only paper-based, held by a variety of civilian and military authorities, and which are neither complete nor universally available to all Governmental agencies. Many jurisdictions record only the number and type of guns held, and not the registration numbers.

New Zealand abandoned universal firearms registration in 1983 because it was costly and ineffective. Registration is still required for handguns and military-style semi-automatics, as well as other restricted categories.

Existing New Zealand firearms law is regarded widely as being the best in the world, despite ill-informed scaremongering on the part of the anti-gun lobby.
