Sporting Shooters Association of New Zealand
Media release: 1 June 1999

A spate of shootings over the last week in one major overseas city have left four persons (including one woman) dead and one man critically injured in hospital. Just the sort of thing we have come to expect from the US.

Normally the activists from the Coalition for Gun Control here and in the UK would seize on such incidents and would be baying for more gun control here at the top of their voices. But they won't be this time! Why? Because these shootings did not occur in the US( where violent crime is falling dramatically) but in London, the capital of the country whose tough gun laws they demand New Zealand follow.

The problem faced by anti-gun activists both here and in the UK is that, having registered and restricted all guns for almost 80 years, having banned and confiscated all of the the pistols previously owned legally by ordinary Britons, there is not much more they can do with tougher gun control. Yet, at the same time as they were passing tougher and tougher gun laws and finally passing laws confiscating all pistols, their violent crime rate - with and without guns - has been rocketing upwards. For years the anti-gun lobby have justified their position by claiming that the more guns in society, the more crime. The most recent crime data shows otherwise. Last year the UK with very low gun ownership (only 2 million guns among 60 million people) had 78 gun murders. In contrast, New Zealand, with high gun ownership (1 million guns among 3.5 million people) had just 8 gun murders. Now if guns really did cause crime, it would have to be the other way around.

The anti-gun lobby in the UK are now in the tricky position of not having anything else to ban, nothing else to really get tough on, no-one to pick on except the criminals themselves- and that goes against the grain for these naive trendy liberals who have done so much harm to their society. They have managed, by deceit and marketing skills to get the laws they wanted, only to find that they were mistaken and have made things dramatically worse, not better.

For the few honest anti-gun activists, it must be a bitter pill indeed to slowly realise that it is they who were wrong all along, that the despised and wicked gun lobby were right after all and that taking guns off the people who don't commit crimes does not reduce crime but actually encourages violence against unarmed and vulnerable victims. That is why the Coalition for Gun Control will simply keep quiet about these incidents in London and hope we don't learn about them. In a few weeks they'll be right back, telling us all how safe England is because of its tough gun laws. Sadly, many of our local Councils (like Auckland ) will continue to naively believe and support them.

ENDS.
